Billion Trees and Beyond Episode #: 7 - 13: Plantation Drive at ITI Layout

This is the first plantation drive off my neighbourhood, this time it is the ITI Layout near our locality.

Right now I am doing it just  by myself. I am sure this will become a team of volunteers, then many a team working independently in different localities and so forth.

So, I load the plant stems in the back seat of the car, I carry a pickax, a shovel, a pair of gloves, and water in the recycled paint drum with  a mug. This much is enough for a session.  I had 11 sets of stems, but I ran out of time to do all of those, so planted 7 in this trip before rushing to the next appointment for the day, being bit late (not apologetic though, as this delay was well deserved)..

I like to document, how the planting gets done for now, step by step.

Step 1: Start digging using the pickax and the showel. Clear the top cement or bitumen layer. Dig it very next to the gutter, ensure no blockage for the vehicles, gates, and parking.

Step 2: Ensure the hole is dug for a foot or so. Ensure there is no blockage of big stone in the bottom, else the roots will find it hard to spread. Touching the native red soil is the confirmation that you have dug enough to have access for the roots to spread.

Step 3: Take a set of cuttings already prepared as a bunch. This is Mexican sunflower stems. One stem is enough, but taking no chances ensuring at least one of the many will survive. If all survive, that too is ok. the foliage will be thicker. (Also, these cuttings when mature, will serve as a factory to supply more cuttings as this movement will grow).

Step 4: Fill the rest of the hole with the soil, pack it tight especially near the stems. Remove the thread around the stems, used for holding them together as a set. Rearrange the rubble like stone, bitumen and concrete pieces around the plant to create a psychological boundary for it.

Step 5: Finally, water the plant. In this case, it is water that was carried, so limited to three mugs and that was enough.  This plant will survive even without specific care beyond this step.

Step 6: It takes 5 -10 minutes to plant one set like this.  Do not forget to take photo and location map recording in the WhatsApp. Include the caretakers if any in the photograph. Include yourself in the photo if you like to. If no one around, take a selfie with the plant. (I do not take selfies as it is a generation thing, I want to be too old for it, also I do not want to scare the readers too!)

Documentation of all seven episodes through this plantation drive is given below.

Episode # 8:
Date of documentation: Sept 7, 2018
Place: ITI Layout, Banashankari 3rd Stage, Bangalore 560085, India
Type of place: Public, by the road side

Location of the plant: (Stand by the plant and use the Send Current location feature of the Whatsapp to create this map)
Date planted: Sept 2, 2018
Remarks:  This is by the main road and the whole stretch has no trees. I did take the permission from the home owners prior to planting this. Before even documenting this, this plant is gone, I need to investigate with the home owners and check whether it is the vandalism or they changed their mind about it.

Note on Sept 29, 2018: Episode #8 dint make it. Therefore, replacing this instance with another plantation elsewhere.

This is Jamun tree, planted at a dead end of a street in Chennammanakere Acchukattu, on Sept 22, 2018.
Location : Chennamanakere Acchukattu, 3rd A cross, 3rd Main: Click this link for details Episode #8 Replacement Location at Chennammanakere Acchukattu
Planted by Nataraja Upadhya, Care by Roopa Kumar

Episode # 9:
Date of documentation: Sept 7, 2018
Place: ITI Layout, Banashankari 3rd Stage, Bangalore 560085, India
Type of place: Public, by the road side
Persons Responsible: Planted by Nataraja Upadhya; Care by the home dwellers

Location of the plant: (Stand by the plant and use the Send Current location feature of the Whatsapp to create this map)
Date planted: Sept 2, 2018
Remarks:  This is the road corner where the road curves and there is a BWSSB manhole nearby. This episode will test the suitability of the Mexican Sunflower for the safety of the manhole cement work. Though I do have the support of home residents on this plantation, I am bit nervous about the vandalism, it is very easy to topple this by running one's vehicle on this. Let us see!

Note of Sept 29, 2018: Episode #9 dint make it. Hence a replacement plantation within the Indira Canteen garden near SSM School, Tyagarajanagar. This garden is maintained by these two gentlemen.
Location: Indira canteen, near SSM school, Tyagarajanagar: Indira Canteen next to SSM School, Tyagarajanagar

Planted by Nataraja Upadhya on Sept 22, 2018
Care by these two gentlemen, shown in the photo, both heading different Ambedkar Welfare Societies.

Date planted: Sept 2, 2018
Remarks:  This is the other end of the same site as Episode # 9, but the next site owners are very thrilled to take care of this plant. They were very happy to pose with the plant, also called their neighbor to join in for the session. They insisted that they will water the plant and will repeat the same forever. (I may watch this for the difference due to regular watering).

Note on Sept 29, 2018: The Episode 10 plant dint make it. Hence replacing it with a plantation near my home.

Mexican Sunflower, this is actually a second time attempt in this spot as first time around a Car driver vandalized it while parking here.
Location: Khadi layout, BSK III stage, map location: Khadi Layout location, BSK III stage
Planted by Nataraja Upadhya, approx. by Sept 24, 2018 care by Mr. and Mrs. Vishwadatta, home owners by this plant.

Remarks:  This is by a small cement tank made to feed water to the stray dogs. The permission was taken by the next home owners as the home owners by this plant were not in station. There is a May flower tree before this plantation, but the semi-shade should not bother this sapling much.

Note on Sept 29, 2018: This plant too dint make it. So, having a replacement plant elsewhere for this episode, in Khadi Layout, BSK III stage, off Pai Consultancy Services.  This is the seconf plant planted right there.
